If Eirdyn could have chosen her partner for the school science project, this would not have been her choice.
"Stupid bloody arbitrary assignment." She grumbled under her breath as she entered the room to see him sitting there.

"Hey." He raised a hand, knocking several papers down as he did so.

"Hi." Eir regathered the materials and knelt beside them trying to organize the whole thing.

Jeffery- for that was his name, indicated a painting on the wall of two knights- one a fair haired human and one a dark haired elf standing majestically on a battlefield wearing dress armour in a flattering if not completely historically accurate portrait.

"She really your sister?" He inquired, ignoring the school project entirely. "C'os I hear that was true right?"

Eir rolled her eyes. "Yes- she is."

"Awesome- she's totally hot. So's th'other one. I'd totally hit either of those."

Eirdyn grimaced. "I'll be sure to pass that along." Pause. "To their husbands."
She began to set out the various components needed for their experiment.

The boy laughed. "but really- she's smoking."

"Right."

"So how come you don't look like alike?" He raised a brow curiously, ignoring the project, while Eirdyn continued to try and prepare it.

"We don't? Fuck I thought we were twins." The girl squinted as she read the fine print on a bottle.

"Seriously though, are you like- adopted?"

"No."

"So why'd you look like a pak?"

Aeradeyenah glared. "Sheer force of will."

"So like -was your mom raped by a Tsuru in the war or something?"

"Bloody hell! The Tsurukans fought with Runne in the last war, try reading a gods-damned history book from time to time eh?"

"Cesera alright! Jeeze."

"Can we get on with the project now?" Eirdyn shook a bottle frustratedly towards him.

"Yeah yeah sure." The boy began half-heartedly setting out ingredients. "The hell is half this stuff?"

"Maybe it would help if you listened in class."

"That's for nerds." He snarked peering at a bottle himself.
"Anyway- my dad was in the other war, said the Tsurus are evil and you shouldn't trust them, but I'm like totally cool with you guys."

"I'm elated." Grumbled Eir through set teeth.

"huh?"

"Nevermind."

"Whatcha doin' retard?" Came a voice from behind her as a young blonde boy bounded into the room exuberantly. He flopped down on the nearby sofa face-first, leaning off of it to peer at the goings on.

"Oh gods- all I bloody need." Eir muttered under her breath at the arrival. "Fuck off Tristan."

"Oo making a love-potion so you can finally get a boyfriend willing to put up with your retardedness?"

"Yes, it's for you have fun." She shook a test-tube at him.

"Eugh." He wrinkled his nose in disgust. "I'm going to tell mum, you know how she is about doing magic in the house."

Eirdyn rolled her eyes, for what may have been the millionth time that evening. "It's a chemistry project for school dipshit."

Before the lad could reply the other young man in the room spoke up. "S'how come he looks like your sister when you don't?"

"'Cos her dad's some douchebag from Kelfast."

"What is that like, Tsuruku?"

Eir rolled her eyes, but before she could reply her brother chimed in. "Not for five hundred years moron."

His sister broke into laughter. "Okay Tristan it's official, he gets the most annoying stupid twat crown for now- you have a reprieve. Enjoy it while it lasts."

Jeffry stood up in a huff. "Y'know what? Screw you, I don't have'ta listen to this."

The girl grimaced. "Fine- get lost, I can do this without you and explain to the teacher how you bailed, or hells I'll finish it myself and give you credit if it makes you leave."

"Fine." The boy folded his arms and stormed out of the room, the front door slamming a few minutes later.

Eirdyn fumed, slamming the assorted bottles and tubes into place with barely a glance at the instructions.

"I can help with that f'you want." Her brother offered out of the blue.

The girl's brow was raised with much scepticism.

"If that moron can do it so c'n I." He insisted grabbing a nearby paper to examine, gold-hazel eyes, the only feature common to he and his skinner mother aside from high cheekbones, glinting wickedly.

"O-kay." The girl drawled slowly, reading another of the instruction sheets.

As the two sat and worked on the project her brother spoke up once more.
"Y'realize you're going to owe me so much."

Eirdyn made an exasperated 'pfft' sound.

"Seriously you're going to be my little Dee-Dee? Slave."

"Don't call me that twit."

"Dee-dee slave, Dee-dee slave!" He chanted waving a test tube at her.

"I'm going to turn you into a frog, pillock."

"Yeah, like you could retard-slave."

"Ughhahh!" The girl grumbled at him.

Meanwhile their parents watched on from the hall, Jesira giggling softly as her partner smirked. "You're right dear, it was a good idea to give her a sibling."
She whispered.

Kariad grinned, pulling the other woman closer with an arm around her shoulder. "See? All my ideas as bloody brilliant."

Lola

The bayou thrummed as the Queen Lola Fine churned her way across the night – a sound quite unlike anything mechanical, an enveloping sort of placidity that only the dankest corners of the world can reproduce. To the left, the bog grew deeper and stickier (which the riverboat did well to avoid!) and on the opposite side, trees and a small strip of land bordered the sea.

The door to the stateroom (which was finely-appointed, but this story cannot tell you more about that) swung open, and a pair of men strode out – one in fine clothes: a magnificent white shirt and black waistcoat. The other wore a rather shabby coat, threadbare and rather severely patched. The first man – whose hair was wavy and sleek like a horse's mane – moves to walk beside the ship's rail, and the second – whose hair was blond, and contained in a sequence of braids – follows suit.

“You must tell me,” says the former with a sigh. “Tell me all! And of why this magnificent creature with whom you tarry must be yours. I can scarcely imagine that you might do justice.”

The latter frowns, and sets his teeth in a sort of grimace – and it is plain to see that he is irked, to say nothing of annoyed. “S'none of your business, Von. Leave her alone, arright?”

“I would,” sighs Vondero – for that is his name, the latter two syllables a matter of frequent, conspicuous omission by the second man. “Only I find that she is beautiful, and I also find that you often have a different companion every time we meet. It is a casual humour with which you dispense with matters love and romance: and if it is to be a romance of yours, I see no reason why I cannot intervene.”

“What?” The blond man scratches his unshaven jaw, frowning as he deciphers what must be a rather trying ear-parcel indeed.

“If you are to dispense of her-”

“I don't 'dispense,'” says the second irritably. “Just ain't ever much. I get my rocks off, chick gets hers. Maybe we hang around for a while if s'convenient..”

“Logan,” sighs Vondero, “I am dreadfully disappointed in you, as always. Love is a great thing, a fire that is kindled between two hearts! And there is nothing wrong with a brief love – for indeed, the fire that burneth brightest burneth out the quickest.”

Logan – for that is, in turn, his name – tucks a stray braid behind his ear. “Dress it up how you like,” he says shortly.

“I do,” notes the first man, beginning to descend the staircase to the lower deck. “But surely, you recognize that romance is what one makes of it.”

They walk wordlessly for a number of seconds, bullfrogs and flies in the distance battling Lola Fine and her wheels for auditory supremacy.

“All I am saying,” resumes Vondero (once they are again in motion on a level plane,) “is that – given your propensities, I would be deeply gratified to take her off of your hands. Miss Meiara is a lovely creature, and I am certain that winning her affections would not be anything unlike possible for myself.”

“Mind your own fuckin' business,” growls Logan. “You take 'er 'off my hands,' I'll start with yours. Understand?”

“Territorial? Oh, we haven't changed one bit.” Vondero twists the very tip of his mustache. “Except -Oh, my. You've laid out a substantial sum to me on her behalf, haven't you? Certainly not very in character – I shall have words.”

“I'm a giver.”

A wry smile lifts the corners of the same mustache. “Not in my experience. Heavens, master Dalry – I do recall her using your real name. Verily, thy heart be lain bare! And it beats a woman's name.”

Hawk rolls his eyes. “You can quit bein' such an ass any damn time now.”

Vondero stops, leaning against the rail at the very stern of the ship – water rushing lazily by just a few feet below the rail. Regarding Logan with a curious expression, he raises an eyebrow – and taps his foot. “Goodness. I'm not wrong?”

It isn't a question.

Pause. “It's complicated,” says Hawk quietly, at last.

“My. I could never have anticipated that.”

“I'm serious, Von. Give me a fuckin' second here, arright?”

A roll of the eyes follows a folding of the arms.

“She's... pretty different,” says Logan after another long moment of silence. “I mean, yeah. She's a great fuck-”

“Logan, please.” Vondero holds his hands up in distress, eyes downcast and full of disappointment and pain. “She is a lovely creature, and I need not my affections trampled so. Let me remind you that it is never too late to adopt a gentlemanly policy of discretion.”

Hawk glares. “I get along with her, alright? I dunno what the fuck this is, but I like havin' her around an' I like what I ain't supposed to mention t'you, or whatever.”

“And your plans?”

“Dunno. Survive, I guess. See what's around t'be seen.”

“Relating to the lady with whom party the first has been grievously unwilling to release into circulation.”

He shrugs, making a furtive kind of eye contact with Vondero. “She'll just take my arm sometimes,” he says solemnly. “Or kiss me 'fore I go off someplace. For absolutely no fuckin' reason, an' even though we ain't said much about it but 'we'll see.'”

Eyebrow rises once more. “And this is a problem?”

“No, fuck. No. Don't mind a bit. But I don't... God. Von, I don't even know what the fuck I want.”

“So it's complicated,” mimics Vondero sardonically.

“No, I guess not.” Logan shrugged, a look of intense frustration on his face. “B'even so? Doesn't mean I can figure it out.”

The Lola Fine chugged into the night, non-silence again threatening to overwhelm them both. And then, with a sad smile, Vondero pressed a hand to Logan's shoulder. “Then it sounds very much like romance to me, good man.”

An' I got all weepy an' retarded."

"Aww," said Tal. "See, he's a great guy."

"I know," says Mor, maybe a little defensively. "S'why I. Y'know. I wanted t'give him a treat."

"Mor, jus' because you're getting a little older doesn't mean you gotta do something like that. When two people're in love, they don't need stuff like that."

"Uh huh, well. S'pretty muchly what he told me. An' then we fucked."

Talia giggled. "Wouldn't've, ya know. Expected any less from you guys."

"What the fuck, bitch? You sittin' around expectin' our fuckin' each time? 'Cause I gotta say, I'm-"

"Goddamn it, Tal." Trasiia sidled up to the bar, eyeing the close configuration - that is to say, Morgain's arm around Talia - and scowling. "How come you aren't cluing me in when you're starting in with the girl-on-girl?"

Talia craned her neck, frowning. "Huh?"

Tras took a drag from her cigarillo. "Yeah, fine. Play dumb. But you decide the caped lady's going looking for some new small hands, don't fucking keep it from me."

"Man, fuck off." Mor smirks. "Gonna make her future hubby's dick explode."

"Oh, fine. Tal, c'mon.
Question.

Talia arose from her chair at the sound of the doorbell- setting
a substantial collection of photographs down on a small table
beside it.

She answered the door to find a rather nervous looking half elf
on her step. "Kariad!" She exclaimed, surprised, but happy.

"Hey." The woman in question raised a hand in greeting.

"Come in come in!" Fussed Talia ushering her inside. "You must
be so tired from your trip! Traffic is horrible this time of
year, unless you took the train?"

The half-blood laughed. "Fuck that shit I teleported."

Talia grinned. "Oh of course you did. Want some coffee?"

"Yeah sure, thanks." Kariad returned slouching into a nearby
recliner.

"Oh ! Oh look!" Exclaimed Talia. "I got the girls those
newfangled cameras and just look at the pictures they've been
taking!" Without delay the pile of photos was deposited into
Kariad's lap.

The older woman leafed through them curiously as the younger set
about the coffee preparation. The pictures mostly featured
Talia's daughters and grandchildren along with various friends
and relations.

"Impressive." Scruffy brown hair fell from the argonesh eyes as she looked up.

Talia came back, coffee in hand. "Yeah it's so much clearer and
better quality than those old 'picture sticks', And ! It doesn't
take anywhere near as long to take one."

Kariad smirked. "Actually I meant how those kids look more and
more like you every day- I swear there is something in that
Forenthye blood that makes it dominate everything else."

Talia laughed. "We're just good stock."

Kariad's nervousness dissapeared as she too laughed. "I think
Luminar has a hand in it, he probably just wants the world
populated with beautiful women."

"Hey don't you oggle my grandchildren." Talia teased.

"Yess'm." Her almost step-mother saluted
.
"So what brings you to town Kariad? Not that you aren't always
welcome, but it's a long way to travel out of the blue, even for
those who can teleport."

"Er." Nervousness took over once more in an instant as the
argonesh froze like a frightened deer before running a hand
through her hair.
"I er- sort of had a favour or uh question of sorts to ask you."
The two womens' eyes met- Talia's gently lined, her
appearance now much older than Kariad, although softened by her
touch of elven blood and the grace of her God.
"Go on?" A brow was raised.

"See I've been thinking for a while about er, marrying your
mother."

Talia blinked for a moment. "Why now? Is everything okay?"

Kariad nodded emphatically. "Yeah, yeah everything is fine."

The knight's lips pressed together. "I suppose I am wondering
why it took you so long."

Kariad shrugged. "Er- I um." The corner of her mouth tilted.
"This wasn't actually the sort of response I was expecting."

"What did you expect?"

"I don't know 'who do you think you are wanting to marry my
mother? ' all that."

Talia shook her head pulling Kariad into a tight embrace. "Oh
you silly woman, whatever would make you think that?"
Kariad shrugged again. "I don't always think clearly when I
panic- and er, I'm not exactly a stellar citizen, ex con and
all."

"Kariad that was years ago- It was strange at first but you two
have been together forever. You really were that worried I'd
have a problem with it?"

"Nah that was just part of it- there were a lot of stupid things
holding me back. As I said I don't always make the best choices
okay?"

"I get that." Talia returned kindly, sipping on her coffee.
"So why now?"

Kariad too drank her coffee- taking one sip before deciding it
lacked adequate sugar- which was then applied liberally. She kicked a
leg over the side of the chair as she mused her reasoning. "I'm
not getting any younger,be two hundred in a few weeks. I think
it is something I'd regret if I never did. And it would give
your mother a good excuse to throw a party or several, and you
know how much your mum likes those."

Talia laughed. "She really does- especially weddings."

"And? I think she'd look bloody gorgeous in a wedding dress."

"She would she would!" Talia clapped her hands together.

"I er- already got a ring." She pulled a small box from a pocket
and handed it over."You think she'll like it?"

Talia opened the box curiously, blinking wide eyed as she peered
in. "Jesicrisi, this thing is huge! Y'know if you were a guy I
would say you were compensating for something."She teased.

"Ey." Kariad grinned sheepishly. "Your mum deserves the best!"

"She does- and it's beautiful. I know she'll love it."

"So er anyway, I came her to um- ask for your mother's hand. I
am going to propose to her anyway, but er, you know."

Talia laughed. "Of course you can, but I am not sure it's mine
to give."

"Who else am I supposed to ask, your grandmother?"

"Yeah-no, I don't think mom would like that.You know I hoped
they'd be over this by now. It's been so many years."

Kariad shook her head. "Some things you don't just get over-
being abandoned at birth? That is one of those things."

Talia shrugged. "Suppose you're right. Anyway! Enough of that,
we should celebrate!"

As she spoke a key turned in the door, followed by the sound of
it opening. Moments later a distinguished grey haired man stepped in laden
with shopping bags. "Kariad! What's the occasion!" Erick set the
bags down and leaned over to give her an affectionate kiss on
the cheek, his beard tickling her skin as it brushed.

Before she could reply Talia interrupted excitedly. "She's going
to propose to my mother!"

"It's about time!" Returned the man with a playful grin.

"Ey enough of that, your wife already got on my case for it."
Kariad smirked retaking her slouch position.

"Oh, sweetheart where are those new glasses we got for our
anniversary? I think we still have a bottle of champagne left
over in the cold-box." Talia began checking assorted shelves.

"I don't know." He shrugged.

"You're a big help." Returned his wife sticking out her tongue.
"Could you go and get the champagne then?"

Erick indicated his bag-laden arms. "After I put these away?"

Talia rolled her eyes. "men." She grumbled at Kariad.

"Ey, they have some uses." She met Erick's eyes with a private
sort of smirk. "I can get the champagne."

The pair wandered into the kitchen where Erick began putting
things away and Kariad got champagne and a corkscrew. "Speaking
of uses- you are going to be my best man." No where in her tone
was a question indicated. "If you refuse I won't be held
accountable for my actions."

Erick grinned raising both eyebrows.

"Not like that- gods you're still such a cheeky lad."

"Hardly a lad."

Kariad blew the loose strands of hair from her face. "Pfft- I am
three times your age I'll call you a lad if I want to."

He laughed. "Fair enough. And I would be honoured."

"Good." She nodded at him in self satisfaction as they returned
to the living room with the bottle, which Kariad then began to
try and open.

She was still struggling with it when Talia returned with three
elegant glasses. "Bloody hell, this thing is stuck." She
complained, wincing as she tugged.

"Gimme." Talia held out a hand, in which the bottle was quickly
deposited. Her somewhat wrinkled knuckles glowed softly as she
popped the cork free effortlessly.

"Showoff." Kariad crossed her legs, the top one bouncing up and
down restlessly.

Tal smiled triumphantly as she poured the sparkling drink into
the glasses, handing one to each of the others before raising
her own. "To family!" She said raising it.

"Family!" The others echoed, for that is what they were.

Her feet were sore - her stomach growling. Talia was
wondering why on Anoth this had seemed like a good idea.
She had been thinking about her mother's cooking-
fantasizing almost, the girl was beginning to think she
was hallucinating smells when it came to her that she was
in fact entering a small town, and the smells came from
a nearby restaurant.
"Ugh." Her nose tormented her, she pulled a very light
pouch with very few coins in it from her pocket. "Dammit-
I shouldn't." He stomach growled as if trying to
contradict her point. "Meh- I am not gonna be much use to
anyone if I starve to death."
With this the girl changed direction, making a line for
the source of the wonderful aroma.
She entered the establishment, it was not noteworthy, but
it might as well have been a royal kitchen as far as she
was concerned. "Hi." She said cheerfully to the man
behind the counter.
The man- a balding human in his late fifties looked at
her with the typical level of enthusiasm of an average
server in a restaurant - which is to say not a lot.
"Can I get you?"
"Roast beef- potatoes- green beans." She asked eagerly.
"With lots of gravy please. Oh and some tea!"
The man's wrinkled face cracked into a smile. "Al right
miss, just a moment- take a seat."
"Kay thanks!"
"New in town?" The inquiry came from an argonesh man
seated at the counter looking bored.
"Passing through." Explained Talia as she sat at a nearby
table, her feet throbbing as she finally released them
from their burden.
The man nodded with mild interest as he drank his coffee.
"Where are you headed?"
Talia shrugged. "Uh- sort of working my way towards
Remlas. Um actually, you wouldn't happen to know anyone
in town s'got any jobs to do would ya? Temporary stuff-
or an opening with the guard or something?" She asked
hopefully.
The man laughed. "Guard? Village's barely got a post
office- not much of a guard to speak of. Constable does
his rounds, need any more than that they come from the
larger towns."
Tal frowned. "Gotcha- uh, see I'm a good fighter, I can
do a little carpentry too. Worked in a shipyard."
The man looked her up and down, taking in her mediocre
weapon. "Right." He said- tone tainted with scepticism.
Talia wrinkled her nose, trying not to look too hurt.
"Well if you uh- think of anything lemme know."
"Will do." The man shrugged and returned to his coffee.
A few moments later the server returned with her tea,
which he sat down in front of her. "John- you know anyone
has work? Kid's looking for a job." The argonesh man
asked as he passed. "Job? What sor-" He stopped,
realizing he ought to address the question to Talia and
not the other man. "What sort of job are you looking for
miss?"
Talia shrugged. "Um- see I'm a uh- mercenary of sorts. So
f'there's a-" her nerve began to fail her. "Crime problem
or something I can take care of it. F'not I can do a bit
of carpentry or whatever."
The older man frowned at her. "I don't know miss. Not much
call for mercenary work here" He too sounded
none-too-confident in her ability.
Talia's nose wrinkled and stare became more focused and
confident as she met his eyes. "I'm tougher than I look."
She noted defiantly.
John shook his head. "Whatever you say miss." He paused
and considered for a moment. "Hm- what about Jeffries?"
The question seemed rhetorical,or directed at someone
else since Talia clearly had no way of knowing this
person.
The argonesh man looked up only for long enough to roll
his eyes. "Farmer- lives just outside town. In here a
couple 'days ago complaining that something's stealing
his cattle. Constable stopped listening to him, says it's
wild animals again and not his job to take care of it.
Jeffries seems to think it's kobolds or something, think
I remember him saying something about payment to get rid
of them." He shrugged. "Don't know much else."
Talia's brow raised. "Oh? Where does he live?"
"Little dirt road leads north out of town- big farm on
the left can't miss it."
"Thank-you!" The girl returned brightly.
The older man's brow furrowed. "You just be careful miss-
if it is kobolds, well they're harmless if you leave them
alone, but I hear if they're threatened they can be
fierce little critters. Cunning too."
Talia nodded. "I know- I've heard about them before. I'll
be careful." She noted, beginning on her tea.
"Thanks again!"
John nodded with a grunt and returned to the kitchen.
Talia's meal was delivered and eaten- the latter with far
more energy and enthusiasm than the former. The girl paid
and left in due time and made her way to the farm.
Sure enough it was exactly where it had been described to
be- a large old building with surrounding barns and
fields.
Talia straightened her clothes and hair and placed four
quick, loud knocks on the door.
A voice called from behind the house. "Round back."
Talia obliged and followed it- finding a man in his
forties stacking fire-wood.
"Uh hi!" She called as she got closer.
The man looked up from the wood-pile, examining the girl.
"Can I help you?"
"Heard you were having trouble with missing livestock?"
"That's right- damned kobolds are stealing them."
Talia nodded. "I see- well uh, I can help. S'what I do."
"You can eh?" He raised a brow, looking at the girl
critically. "And who might you -be- young lady."
"Talia P-Forenthye?. I am a mercenary." She replied with
as much conviction as she could muster.
"Mhph." He returned- amused. "Well those scaly little
bastards have been taking my cattle for the last couple
of months- constable doesn't want to do a damned thing
about it, Says pest control isn't his job. Lazy-" He cut
off his next word, probably because of the lady present.
"So you know it's kobolds?"
"Of course!" The man snapped in reply. "I saw one last
month, evil- red eyes like a demon."
Talia blinked at the sudden shout. "Uh here?"
"No on the other side of the hill, but I know it's them.
Tricky little vermin- they use witchcraft you know." He
said with conviction, shaking the axe in his hand.
"They do?" Replied a slightly wide-eyed Talia ,trying not
to look intimidated.
"Last spring- turned into foxes and stole my chickens,
but I knew it was them." He grimaced. "Tricky." He
repeated for emphasis.
"Well I'll take care of any I find." She tapped her
sword.
"You can stay here until the job is done- spare room
upstairs. Wife cooks, you may eat as well. You steal from
me I'll have your head you understand?"
Talia blinked. "Yessir."
"Good." He said gruffly. "You get eight cerrin if you
find them and clear the lot. And don't expect me to get
you raised if you die- that's not my problem."
"Um of course."That was not what Talia wanted to be
thinking about, as the possibility was seeming all too
real.
"You have anywhere to stay?" Talia shook her head. "Then
you can stay here tonight- start work at first light."
She nodded. "Okay."
A modest meal and decent night's rest left her refreshed
and provided some relief for her weary muscles. Sure
enough at first light she was awoken to a knock on the
door- and not long after set about the task of
cow-retrieval.
The pasture was large- and ringed at one end by dense
woods. She walked the length of the fence searching for
signs of the alleged thieves.
"Gods why did I get myself into this- I am just gonna get
myself killed over a bunch of cows." She muttered as she
walked, completely ruining any chance of maintaining the
element of surprise.
As she wandered through the edge of the woods something
caught her eye, a footprint. Partially covered by forest
debris- she brushed a few leaves aside and determined
that it likely belonged to a cow. "Huh." She muttered
searching for more near the fence.
Which she found- a number of them in fact all leading
from a part of the fence that had been bent down to the
point where a moderate amount of force- say a cow
leaning on it, would push it out of the way completely.
This was largely covered by brush- making it easy to miss
if one was not looking closely.
There were however no signs of kobolds, no tracks other
than the cows.
She followed the trail for some distance through the
woods- occasionally losing it and having to re-trace her
steps. After a few miles she came out at a marsh, and
beyond it an abandoned orchard and meadow. There, among
the apple-trees and overgrown fields, the missing cows
stood about placidly, grazing and chewing their cud. The
way cows do.
Talia giggled as she saw the 'stolen' animals. "There you
are." She said walking up to a nearby bovine and petting
it on the head. "You all look fine t'me. Great!" She said
cheerily. "Mister Jeffries'll be happy I found you guys."
She said with a grin turning back to where she'd come
from and walking farmwards with renewed energy.
The trek back did not seem as long and soon the farm was
back in view- Talia walked up to Jeffries, who was doing
chores in the yard.
"I found your cows!" She said brightly as she approached.
He looked up with a grunt. "So the kobolds are dead? That
was fast." He said , sounding impressed.
"Uh- not so much, see there weren't any kobolds, turns
out the cows just got out a hole in the fence." The man's
expression darkened. "You calling me a liar."
Talia shook her head. "N..no sir."
"Get out!" He shouted.
"What about my pay?" She asked timidly.
"Out!" He shouted again- this time more loudly.
Talia glared- with all the ferocity of a labrador puppy.
"But I found your cows!" She insisted.
"Off of my land before I have you removed." He snapped-
fuelled by the anger of embarrassment, a young girl finding
so easily what he had consistently missed.
Talia huffed- folding her arms. She then stalked off
sullenly towards the main road- muttering to herself as
she did so.
For days she walked - barely stopping. It felt an
eternity before Ainbenr the tenth came around.
Light spring rain had turned into a downpour and there
was little shelter to be found in the farmland that
stretched towards the outskirts of Remlas, which were
visible in the far distance.
"Happy birthday Talia." The girl said dejectedly, down to
her last coppers, hungry wet and tired. "So- s'Remlas or
go home with my tail between my legs." She lamented.
"Better find something in Remlas I guess."

Kariad bio

Brygid Tralesque was in many ways a foolish and flawed woman, but she did her best for Eirdyn and myself. Which unfortunately wasn't alot.
Her husband died when Eirdyn was very young, my sister didn't remember him at all, what she did remember was a 'point ear man' that used to come to the house when she was about four, our mother always told her not to tell anyone about him, which eventually lead us to the conclusion that he was married, if there was some other reason that she hid their relationship neither Eirdyn or myself ever knew.
Apparently she was very upset for a while and the point ear man stopped coming to the house, it was not long after that she moved to Evysun and I was born.
Life was hard and we had no money, but we got by. Eirdyn and I were inseparable, she looked out for me. That was until she was seventeen and met this earnest fresh faced young man, she became hopelessly smitten and the two became engaged, she also became pregnant although I am not entirely sure which came first, family trait I suppose.
The two of them had plans to start a new life somewhere down south, they saved up their money and left saying they would send for us when they got settled somewhere, the last letter I got they were doing fine, they were broke but happy and looking forward to getting married.
That winter a fever hit the town, it was brutal and the priests and alchemists had their hands full dealing with it. I was stricken and almost died, my family line is not known for being sturdy. My mother looked after me day and night ignoring her own illness to tend to mine, she said if we had faith and stuck together we could make it through, I prayed day and night and eventually I got better. She did not.
I was thirteen and on my own, I had no idea what to do. After staying in my house alone for three days I went to the chapel and the priests made arrangements for me to stay with a family, they however couldn't afford to take care of me and I was shuffled around a number of places before I ended up...-there-.
This couple, who seemed like a lovely pair to anyone outside, took me into their home. But instead of caring for me I was treated like shit, I was like slave labour to them and they looked good to everyone else for their charity. I wanted to run away but I had nowhere to go, there at least I had food and shelter. Some days it wasn't so bad, they had an old hunting dog who kept me company, until one day I broke a dish and -she- raised her hand to punish me, the dog bit her. That was the last I saw of him as he was left outside in the snow to freeze to death. At that point I very much wanted to leave, but it was the middle of winter and I didn't know what I would do, the final straw however was when -he- got drunk and had a fight with his wife, she wouldn't satisfy his..wants and he decided that maybe I could, he violated and tried to rape me. He had said things before and touched me in ways that made me uncomfortable, but nothing like that until then. I was lucky, he was drunk and his reflexes were slow, mine had always been quick and I managed to get away by knocking him out.
I ran away, it was all sort of a blur after that. The next thing I knew I was in an abandoned building wrapped in a blanket by a fire with this halfling standing over me, he said he'd found me mostly naked and almost frozen to death in a snow bank clutching the statue I'd used to hit my attacker.
Jerhan taught me the basics of magic, although I had little skill or patience for it at the time, he also taught me how to be a thief. I took to it fast. I was fifteen and angry at the world, he myself and a number of others got into alot of trouble together. In Evysun and also Eitar, although we went back to Evysun when things got too risky elsewhere.
During that time I became somewhat involved with this hopelessly handsome young man. He used his looks and charm to his full advantage with any reasonably attractive woman he met, his charms worked all too well on me. He took advantage of my feelings, whatever they were, for him despite them not being returned, I don't think he even realized how much he was hurting me by doing that. He thought of me as a friend that he liked to fuck sometimes, I cared about him more than I let on. I realize all of that now, at the time I was young and foolish and thought he would change for me. When he didn't the feelings faded and I ended up disliking him, I don't think he ever got it.
This all carried on for a couple of years, we took what we needed or wanted from anyone we could although mostly the ones that got hurt were ourselves. Then I screwed up, I told a fence where we were staying and he betrayed us to the guard. The building we were hiding in got raided and at least most of the others were caught, I am not entirely sure what happened since I was far too busy running for my life to see. I stabbed one of the guards in the stomach as I was escaping, saw him die right there in front of me and I was covered in his blood, first person I killed and it still bothers me to this day.
I became even more angry and bitter, I took it out on the rest of the world and became the very thing I'd hated. Someone who preyed on the weak.
When the weather was good enough I went south, I travelled around for a while on my own until I met a stray dog. Then I travelled with her as my only companion for the next fifteen years before settling down in Haven.
Life there was good and I mellowed out somewhat as I got older, although I was still not exactly what one would call a nice person. I still travelled around a little, but considered Haven my home and came back to there whenever I'd made enough money to live on for a while.
Things continued that way for about a hundred years, it went by surprisingly fast.Until one day I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or perhaps the right one who knows.
Got tangled up in this mess with the war and it's beggingings, and ended up getting hired to rescue this wizard with whom I'd become acquainted during the earlier mishap. It was during this time that two things happened, for one this halfling girl Arya and I became friends, she liked me despite my best efforts to prevent it and I found myself fond of her as well, it was quite strange and I didn't know what to make of it.
I also got back into magics after not bothering with them for a long time, I snuck the wizard Kerra's spellbook from her bag and copied a few spells into one of my own, I also watched her cast alot and it reawakened long buried memories of how to do so.
After some interesting times together the group became insufferable, constant bickering and annoyance combined with impending danger became too much to deal with and I left. Given the events that followed I had assumed them all dead for many years until reuniting with the kobold Gribby, who informed me that all but one had lived for some time after, although the current whereabouts of most were unknown to him.
After roaming around in the wake of the terapithe Selu looting and hiding until the war was over I went to Kelfast. It was a rich city and I resumed my life of crime, the city guard had other plans for me and after a long chase one day I felt a crossbow bolt in my back and woke up in a cell.
I was convicted on a number of counts of robbery and assault and thrown in jail for twenty five years.
During that time I mostly kept to myself, much as I had in the outside world. Apart from the occasional fumbling liason or bored conversation with another prisoner most of my companionship came from wild rats that I tamed. Once I was released I took my favourite with me and performed a spell to bind her as a familiar.
Having no idea what to do with my life at that point I wandered for a few weeks and found myself in Aedwen and decided to go back to Haven since I had hidden some money there.
I got on a ship, it sank.
