Organizations

This article is largely unfinished. There's nothing you can do about this.

Organizations of Note
This section contains groups and associations prevalent in the lands of Anoth Peras and beyond, from businesses and associations to cults and religious groups.

Atheism

Atheism does not exist in Mithica in precisely the classical sense; the influence of the Gods can be seen and felt by anyone at all times. Rather, in this case it implies that an individual (while recognizing that the Gods exist) does not find the gods' influence particularly relevant to their lives, and feels that worship is therefore not an act worth pursuit. Although much of the population does not actively worship a single deity, less than five percent (5%) actively eschew such divine contact.

Church of Purity, The

The Church of Purity is a group of dedicated men and women, primarily of human and elven stock; they are properly referred to as a cult, although the Pure do not prefer to be recognized as such. They oppose crossbreeding of all kinds, but although they find the mingling of racial bloodlines distasteful they consider interspecies reproduction (such as between humans and elves, dwarves and humans, etc.) to be heresy of the highest regard. They oppose such couplings at all sides, attempting to stop the union by way of intimidation and fear. Killings are not entirely unheard of, although in many cases the Church resorts to forced sterilization before resorting to murder. Argonesh are, as the most prevalent cross-breed variety, the most commonly targeted group.

Mortagers

A Mortager is a form of business prevalent in most civilized nations, with varying degrees of legality. Simply put, mortag services provide an alternative to paid resurrection when funds are unavailable; thus, it is a practice kept mostly within the poorer castes.

Typically, service is requested by a relative of the deceased party, although in some cases friends carry that burden - and indeed, occasionally arrangements are made by the first party before death has taken place - but in any case, terms are negotiated between the mortager and this party, and preemptively agreed upon before revification takes place. Finally, a down-payment - usually in cash, although in some instances goods or service can be pledged - is made in the event that the mortaged refuses resurrection. This fee typically amounts to 10% of the raise dead spell used.

Finally, the body is prepared through the use of a proprietary arcane spell that is usually unique to the mortager, which will - when the mortaged is revived - bind them in a fashion similar to a Geas and prevent them breaking the deal. Once this is completed, the mortager has the body raised as normal, either by an in-house cleric or at a temple.

The mortagement spell is tied intricately to the eventual resurrection spell, and if the mortagement is dispelled the character dies immediately.

A mortager makes money by selling the mortaged's services, or contract, to clients. Often this might be businesses like large farms, couriers, and government positions; indeed, it is often easier and cheaper to fill positions such as sewer and slaughterhouse worker through bound mortaged labor than it is to find and pay willing employees. Mortaged labor is also common in high-risk markets, such as security and militia-work.

Mortaged labor is almost always unskilled, as skilled craftspeople typically have the resources to have themselves revived at temple; however, the occasional skilled mortaged commands a high price.

The availability of mortager service is dependent upon demand for work. In some markets, a person looking to mortag a loved one will need to look far from home to find an agency willing to take the deceased.

Fitness and ability are also a concern; it is virtually impossible to find a mortager for the old, crippled, or infirm.

Promised Free'd, The

The Promised Free'd are a cult devoted to the belief that mortal flesh is a perversion, and that a body is sin. They hold a state of disembodied existence to be the perfect existence, and achieve this through an arcane ritual that strips the spirit away from soul and body, allowing this spirit - known as Spiriti Ostos - to roam the world forever, unable to interfere or communicate with the living in any way.

Initially this rite invoked the aid of the Quisling, a damned member of the First race; the Free'd were unaware that the souls cut free by the ritual were being consumed by the Quisling to power his own re-entry to the world of Anoth. Eventually, the Quisling was destroyed and banished - rendering the existing ritual of rending nonfunctional.

This has, for the moment, stopped many of the cult's activities.

Scions, The

The Scions are a legendary group of four people said to be completely immune to not only divine magic, but even the notice and influence of the gods themselves. See Main Article
