The First

The First were a race of beings beyond even godly comprehension, who came before all else and crafted the very earth and cosmos where only endless, green fields had stood. According to legend, they first created the red world of Ern in practice, honing their skills before moving on to Anoth Peras.

There are said to have been six of the First who were past all reckoning by way of potency, and forty more who wielded their power in supplication to the Six. Although their names are lost - with two exceptions - their legacy is passed down by the most learned of scholars.

In ages long forgotten, they made their homes in Mithica; but over time, they formed factions which destroyed their society. Weary of the distrust and hatred that marked their existence, they gave the empty lands to new beings - who would one day become the Gods known today - and moved on.

The only First known by name are Fasu, the Faithless - who was condemned for his cowardice to vigilance over the city Temprus by the greatest among them - and Eschaltar, the Quisling: who made a bid to return to earthly climes by rending a gateway open with the power of ten thousand sacrificed souls, cut from their bodies by an unwitting cult known as the Promised Free'd?. Timely action by several mortals deposited the focus for the souls - the skull of Eschaltar's ancient, worldly remains - into the emptiness of Ern, locking the errant First into solitude for all time.

Fasu
Fasu the Faithless, one of the Forty, was banished to the Deeper Well? beneath Temprus, to guard the city and its contents forever and to return the Faundarschardt to the Well once more, if it could be recovered. He was sealed within the chamber of the Well itself, unable to move or influence anything outside - although he possessed the power of Unstoppable Sight, which allowed him to witness everything that happened within the city.

Eschaltar
The Quisling was among the Forty, least in strength but greatest in ambition. He staged a coup, wresting dominion over Mithica from the ruler of their kind, taking his legendary blade - the Faundarschardt - and bearing it against all who would oppose him. His reign was short and bloody; but in the end, the ruler returned and smote him down.

The First would soon leave the world; but not before Eschaltar was condemned to undying occupation of a chamber beneath Temprus' clocktower. He resisted Fasu's attempt to negotiate for the return of the Faunderschardt for nearly twenty-two thousand years, his spirit withdrawing further and further beyond until all that remained was a bare Shadow-anima.

Reawakening slightly in 479OD, he endeavored to return his full power and being to Runne and break free of his bonds, and by 1399OD was very close to achieving this through the consumption of ten thousand Spiriti Ostos created by his unwitting pawns, the Promised Free'd - but he was struck down, his skull severed and sent to Ern just as his spell was catalysed, destroying every sacrificed soul and locking him forever in the empty, featureless proto-world.
